Las Vegas added 12 miles of dedicated family cycling paths this spring at two Clark County parks.
City data shows family participation in outdoor activities rose 18 percent from 2024 to 2025, driven by new wellness programs at local recreation centers. Summer temperatures push many residents to seek shaded morning routes before 9 a.m., and the new paths avoid steep grades or heavy traffic crossings.
The routes run through Sunset Park near the intersection of Eastern Avenue and Russell Road and through Desert Breeze Park along Spring Mountain Road. Both locations include wide, paved lanes separated from vehicle traffic by landscaped buffers and offer free bike rentals on weekends through the Las Vegas Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs department.
Sunset Park features a 3.2-mile loop that circles the park's central lake with multiple entry points from nearby neighborhoods. The path stays under 2 percent grade and passes restrooms every half mile. Desert Breeze Park offers a 2.8-mile connector that links to the adjacent Desert Breeze Soccer Complex, where families can combine cycling with other activities on the same visit.
Both parks sit within a 15-minute drive of the Summerlin and Spring Valley neighborhoods, giving residents quick access without highway travel. The city installed solar-powered lighting along the routes last month so early-evening rides remain visible during the longer summer days.
The Las Vegas Parks department hosts free beginner clinics every Saturday at 7:30 a.m. through August 30 at Sunset Park's north parking lot. Participants receive a route map and helmet check before a guided 45-minute ride. Helmets rent for $3 and standard bikes for $10 at the on-site kiosk.
Parents planning a first outing should start at either park entrance between 6:30 and 8 a.m. to avoid peak heat. Water fountains operate at both sites, and the city added two new shaded picnic areas at Desert Breeze Park in June. Riders can track real-time path conditions through the Clark County Parks mobile app, which lists any temporary closures due to maintenance or weather.
City planners expect the new lanes to connect to the larger Las Vegas Valley Trail network by 2028, extending safe riding options farther from residential areas.
