With temperatures forecast to hit 108°F on Saturday and 112°F on Sunday, this weekend is the perfect time to take advantage of Las Vegas’s free indoor and outdoor attractions. A weather advisory from the National Weather Service warns of extreme heat through Sunday evening, making air-conditioned or shaded activities essential-but that doesn’t mean you have to spend money.
This summer has been a record-breaking one for visitor spending: the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reported in June that average daily hotel rates hit $237, up 8% from last year. But some of the best weekend experiences in Las Vegas don’t cost a dime. Whether you’re a local looking to avoid the strip’s premium prices or a visitor on a budget, here are three free things to do this weekend, starting today.
First up: the 18th Annual Las Vegas Mural Walk in the 18b Arts District. The walk runs Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a self-guided route that covers more than 40 murals across four blocks between Main Street and Commerce Street. The free map-available at the Arts Factory at 107 E. Charleston Boulevard-also lists live painting demonstrations by local artists like Bella Rose and Thomas “Vegas” Vega, who will be working on new pieces in the courtyard of the Emergency Arts building at 520 Fremont Street.
Last year, the Arts District saw a 22% increase in foot traffic during the mural walk, according to the Downtown Las Vegas Alliance. This weekend, organizers expect even more visitors, thanks to the new “Tech Noir” mural by Argentine artist Jaz, which was completed last Tuesday on the side of the old Vegas Floral building at 112 S. 6th Street. The walk is fully outdoors, so bring water and sunscreen-but the shade from the buildings and the occasional misting station from City Hall’s Parks & Recreation Department makes it bearable, even in triple digits.
One pro tip: start early. The Arts Factory air-conditioned gallery opens at 9 a.m., so you can grab the map and a free coffee sample from the adjacent Vesta Coffee Roasters before heading out.
For something cooler-literally and figuratively-head to Clark County Wetlands Park on Saturday evening. The Las Vegas Shakespeare Company is staging a free performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the park’s nature center amphitheater, starting at 7 p.m. The park, located at 7050 Wetlands Park Lane, is notorious for being 5 to 10 degrees cooler than the Strip because of the 3,000-acre preserve’s native trees, ponds, and shaded pathways.
This is the third year the company has offered this free summer series. Last year, attendance averaged 450 people per show, according to the county’s Parks and Recreation statistics. Bring a blanket or a low-backed chair-the amphitheater has no seating, just grassy terraces-and a picnic. The park’s restrooms stay open until 9 p.m., and there’s free parking in the lot off Wetlands Park Lane. The performance runs about 90 minutes, with no intermission, so plan accordingly if you need to reapply sunscreen (the sun sets at 8:04 p.m.).
The play is appropriate for all ages, and no tickets are needed-just show up. In case of rain (forecast shows only a 10% chance), the performance moves indoors to the Clark County Library Theater at 1401 E. Flamingo Road, also free, at the same time.
Finally, consider a trip to AREA15, the experiential entertainment complex near the intersection of the 15 and the 215. This weekend, AREA15 is offering free timed-entry passes to its new immersive art installation, “Core Memory,” which opened last month. The installation, created by local studio Meow Wolf, fills a 4,000-square-foot gallery with interactive light and sound sculptures-think neon tunnels, mirrored infinity rooms, and floor projections that respond to movement.
The free passes are available on AREA15’s website for time slots from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Normally, these passes cost $15 for a 45-minute session, but this weekend marks a limited-time promotion to celebrate the summer solstice. A count of available slots as of Friday morning showed 120 still open for Saturday and 85 for Sunday. The gallery is indoors with heavy AC, making it ideal for the midday heat.
AREA15’s parking lot at 3215 S. Rancho Drive charges $15 for general parking, but there’s a free alternative: park at the nearby Las Vegas Premium Outlets South (7400 S. Las Vegas Boulevard) and take the free AREA15 shuttle, which runs every 15 minutes from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The shuttle stop is near the food court entrance.
For those looking to stay hydrated, the complex has free water refill stations near the restrooms on the ground floor, and the gift shop offers free cold damp towels for visitors who ask. The Las Vegas heat can be brutal, but with a little planning and a few free tickets, you can have a packed weekend without spending a penny-just don’t forget the sunscreen.
